Courthouse Steps is a variation of the Log Cabin block … the difference between the two is that to piece a Log Cabin block, you work around the centre square, to piece a Courthouse Steps block you work on opposite sides.
The finished blocks made with all dark or all light fabrics look much the same, but using light and dark you get blocks which are quite different.
You wouldn’t get the same results using Log Cabin blocks in any of the designs in this series.
The biggest difference in designing quilts is that symmetrical designs using Courthouse Steps usually need an odd number of blocks, while Log Cabin blocks always need an even number of blocks.
