Courthouse Steps is a variation of the Log Cabin block … the difference between the two is that to piece a Log Cabin block, you work around the centre square, to piece a Courthouse Steps block you work on opposite sides.

The finished blocks made with all dark or all light fabrics look much the same, but using light and dark you get blocks which are quite different.

You wouldn’t get the same results using Log Cabin blocks in any of the designs in this series.

The biggest difference in designing quilts is that symmetrical designs using Courthouse Steps usually need an odd number of blocks, while Log Cabin blocks always need an even number of blocks.

By the way, I love the one in the middle of this week’s selection.

More Log Cabin designs next Wednesday.

How could you not like Log Cabin? As you have shown Judy, there are so many ways of construction even. I like all of today’s.

  2. I love these too. My favorite is Number 1 in the list. Black and gold are a great combo.
