String of Beads Roundabout 21

String of Beads Roundabout 21

I think I just maybe a little obsessed with virtual quilting … I can see a lot of quilting patterns in that design.

I have also learned over the last few weeks that Strings of Beads are very easy to quilt … when I applique them by machine I stitch along one side of the string of leaves, then back the other side. To machine quilt you would just go along the one curved line, then back on another curved line.Being a hand quilter by preference, and a machine quilter under sufferance because it is quicker (to make mistakes) I am trying to think in continuous lines … something I don’t have to do when hand quilting. When hand quilting I just have to think how far the thread I am using will go.

About Virtual Quilter

I am a quilter who designs many more quilts than I will ever make, and I am sharing one quilt design every day in Virtual Quilter. I also share my completed projects in Stuff-Ups, and Christmas decorations in Christmas Everyday of the Year.

  1. It is amazing how different it is to quilt in continuous lines. Makes you look at designs in a totally different order of completion.

    • Cindy,

It certainly is … and I am starting to see possible continuous lines in all sorts of designs which were intended for piecing and applique. Mind you, some need some redrafting, and some lines have to be omitted, especially in pieced blocks.

  2. I love how you are going back to designs and looking at them with a fresh understanding of how they could be used! You are opening my eyes!

    • Laura,

I feel as though my eyes are going to pop out of my head sometimes! It was time for a new challenge and I found it right under my nose.

I am still learning new things about EQ too … yesterday I wondered why there was a Stencil tab in the Sketchbook … a few minutes later I was able to move some motifs to the stencil tab! I am not too sure why, but that may come in useful!

Gorgeous design, looks even better close up! As for quilting it, well, it wouldn’t be easy. You could emphasise the stars or emphasise the circles maybe.

    • Marie,

I have virtually been quilting String of Beads variations all weekend … and could spend the rest of my life just working on the blocks for both applique and quilting and never run out of inspiration. Haven’t got time to do many for real!
