Cornerstone Block Variations

Last week I issued a challenge during the mid week Log Cabin Retreat … to see how many different ways you can use light and dark fabrics in the Chimney and Cornerstones block.

I tried to sort my collection into some logical sort of order, and as I did so found a few extras which I haven’t used yet, then sorted some more. Some are very similar, and there are probably heaps or very similar ones I haven’t ‘found’ yet, but have more than enough to add to the project file I was working on! Just changing the centre squares from all light to half light to all dark as I have done in the first three sets, can influence the way the overall design looks, and sometimes might just be a way of using the fabric we have rather than search for more of one we have run out of!

So, I haven’t used all of these yet, but they just might find their way into a virtual design one day. (I gave up trying to sort out which ones I had used, and which ones I had just found!)

Look at the first set very carefully to note the differences … other sets have similar minute variations.

Did you count them?

The project file scrapbook, where Electric Quilt keeps the blocks for the project file you ar working on, has 102 variations … or perhaps there are some double ups!

By the time I was done I was seeing many doubles, and I didn’t dare have a drink containing alcohol … even coffee was causing me to see more than I could handle!

Now, how many ways can I virtually quilt the background of a virtual quilt before I start seeing everything in triplicate?

PS

I just noticed that I have created some colourways which are out of sync with the ones around them … but then are they wrong, or just in the wrong place, or just that I haven’t created enough to have the right place to put them in!

LOL I chuckled at your PS note. That is amazing the variations that you have come up with and though they may not look like a huge change in the blocks on their own in a quilt they would show up a lot more. I especially like the light cornerstones in the centers and on one diagonal. Would look like “sparkles” in an entire quilt.

    • Cindy,

I much prefer those with the lighter centres, but sometimes use the darker ones so the little light sparkles really stand out in other areas. Both of them are very useful in design!
