9P Centres + Corner 1 A

Ok, I have 3 dozen squares I want to use in the centre of Nine Patch blocks.

I have managed to get myself confused several times trying to work out how to go about this methodically, so I don’t lose track of what blocks I have recorded.

The blocks are Nine Patch, Double Nine Patch, — , —

— , — , — , —

I am starting with the first twelve centre squares, which I showed at the end of the last post  then

adding one corner variation to create another twelve blocks, starting with the familiar Shoofly, then adding all the centres to the centre square.

Blocks are Shoo Fly, — , Air Castle/ Towers of Camelot, —

What if I try creating some quilts designs with the blocks?

Ok, but not stunning.

Still ok.

Interesting.

What if I add some colour changes?

Much more interesting!

The room for experimentation with block combinations and colour variations is huge!

Lots of designs suitable for mystery quilts are hidden in this small collection.

Something I have found is that many of the designs for the centre squares I have found are not used often, if at all, and those that have been used are with much more complex designs in the corners and side squares

I have added the existing names for just four blocks ….. and wonder if and what I will do about naming  the blocks for which I can’t find a match. Any suggestions? You can work on it while I am enjoying the company of quilts and quilters at the Festival of Quilts in Adelaide.

In two weeks time I will add the same corner to another dozen centres.

It would have been next week, but post number 1000 will be published then, and will try to think of something a bit mor exciting than some basic Nine Patch blocks.

About Virtual Quilter

I am a quilter who designs many more quilts than I will ever make, and I am sharing one quilt design every day in Virtual Quilter. I also share my completed projects in Stuff-Ups, and Christmas decorations in Christmas Everyday of the Year.

Hi Judy – I found this series very interesting – sometimes the best ideas turn out to be pretty simple, and the last quilt with more colours shows off very well indeed. I will look forward to seeing more of this series. Thank you.

    • Donna,

Thank you …. you are welcome!

I am finding it very interesting too ….. I have played with Drunkard’s Path for years, dabbled with Log Cabin designs until I started sharing virtual quilts, then started some serious exploration ….. and though I have drawn hundreds of pieced blocks, many of them Nine Patch, I have never thought to explore the possiblilites. Now I can see the way to creating, and in many cases recreating, thousands of Nine Patch blocks.

Then I could do the same with Four Patch, Five Patch and Seven Patch ……. and beyond.
