Nine Patch Quilts

How many ways can the basic nine squares of a Nine Patch block be coloured?

Here are a few I have come up with, but I bet there are many more, especially when you add more fabrics.

How do these particular blocks work in quilts?

For the moment I am going limit quilts to nine blocks.

The basic 9P blocks side by side

Two block variations alternated

Change one of the block variations.

Change the other one.

Three block combination.

Change two of the three block variations.

Back to two variations.

Three block variations again

Change two, rotate one.

Change them all

Again.

And again.

All that …. and then we can add sashing ………

……. before we have to make more blocks to keep finding new designs.

If you have Electric Quilt 7, or any previous versions, or just a pencil and paper, see how many variations of the block colouring you can do, and how many 9 block quilts you can design …. then add more blocks to the quilt layout and start again.

If you do it on paper you will learn about making small variations to make big changes in an overall design.

If you do it in EQ you will learn and become quite comfortable using some of the basic features of EQ.

    There are two lesson here.

First, if this much can be done using simple Nine Patch blocks, then there is even more that can be done using other blocks.

Second. if it is this easy to discover interesting designs, there is no reason for everyone not to do it.

Thank you Judy – once again you are showing me how simple blocks can be changed to create something else, and easily enough at that. Simple is sometimes overlooked when we are trying to create, or put together our fabrics. Colour and contrast does a lot of the work too. I will take your advise and play with a four patch.

    • Donna,

I probably should have started with the Four Patch, but I have always liked Nine Patch better! How ever many patches there are, there are a lot of designs which no-one has discovered yet.

    • Alice,

      Not a genius!

Just silly enough to spend a lot of time playing …. in this case colouring in ….. and seeing what happens, knowing all the time I am not in any danger of breaking anything, or being broken!
