If you are considering allowing your quilt design to be published in a magazine please read the fine print.
Bonnie Hunter did, and wasn’t pleased with what she found.
Perhaps this is why we are getting less than wonderful projects in some magazines!
I hope the magazine in question is not published in Australia.
PS Bonnie has negotiated with the magazine in question, wherever they are from, and they will publish one of her designs in May 2011.
The project will be an a book in 2012.

Well! I am a big Bonnie Hunter fan, and enjoy her designs, website and ideas on coping and using with scraps. There has to be something wrong with a magazine expecting a designer to commit to their contract. It would be nice to know “where”.

Musicians have a fairly strong labor union that fights on their behalf for fair copy right issues. Maybe Quilt designers should form a union? As long as there is a poor sap out there that is willing to agree to the magazine’s terms that magazine will continue to do what benefits them (and not necessarily the quilt designer). Quilt designers should band together and come up with what they consider fair and submit it to the magazines.

I think it is more important to try to educate people who may design something sometime in the future …. so that they know that they can negotiate if offered a contract like the unknown magazine offered in this case. All writers, including those who write music, can be caught in the same way … unless they know enough before they are offered that first contract! There are a lot of people who have no idea there is a copyright law, so are clueless about what rights they have and how to protect them, or at least be paid fairly for signing over their rights.
