Grandmothers Fan is another classic design, which lends itself to a lot of different layouts. While playing with Log Cabin I wondered if similar layouts could be used for both of these two classics. So, add Log Cabin blocks to the Grannies Fan layout above and what do you get?
So, which technique woud you prefer to do, all pieced, or pieced and applique?
I’m a sucker for a log cabin, so my favourites would be the traditional all pieced one. I made one some years ago for my daughter in greens which is still going strong and is much loved. I should do another with all my scraps…….Sue McB

Sue,
I love both Log Cabin and the Fans, but have never made either except as part of a group for the Log Cabin, and blocks to use in samplers for the fans.

Now that I have had time to study the two designs, I think I prefer the log cabin. Wonder what it would look like if you did the same colorations in the fan quilt as you did in the log cabin? While I usually do not care for blue, I wonder if I am swayed by the coloration.

I think we are very much swayed by colour, so it is interesting that sometimes we choose against our usual preference. I prefer this blue combination to the olive/yellow combination I have used in the Log Cabin series, but I would normally stay away from blue!

I love this layout for the Log Cabin. I have just peiced two set in scrappy to make this. One for me and One for our church fundraiser. Love how they are turning out. Thank you for posting this. I just found it on Pinterest.

Wow … I had forgotten this exercise … and should try mixing and matching Log Cabin with some other design quilts. I would love to see a photo of your quilts, and best of luck with the fundraiser.
